Your teaching assistants and I are very much looking forward to the start of class on Monday August 4. If you have technical issues with the website for the class, please contact online@tft.ucla.edu. Do not hesitate to contact me with any issues or questions that you might have. And of course your teaching assistant will be available to discuss each assignment in greater detail and he or she will be in touch with you as the course begins. The reading the first week is unusually heavy. Do not be discouraged because the reading will lighten up the next week (just in time for you to write your first essay). Read through Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality as quicky as you can but linger over the sections of the Social Contract that we are reading (we are not reading it all!). The hardest thing to do when reading is to keep sight of the big picture. This is even true for the short documents we are reading this week. You might want to focus on these questions when reading: what is the subject, what is the approach, what kinds of works are cited? You do not need to remember everything that is said, far from it. You will also notice that the textbook we are using has me as one of the authors. If you find any errors or feel that something important is missing, do not hesitate to tell me as we are always in the process of revising.
